Giving Birth Registration in Berlin & Germany

This post will explain how to register for giving birth in Berlin or Germany in general.

Step 1: Finding a Hospital

To register for giving birth, first you need to select a hospital that has a department for giving birth (Clinic for Obstetrics), because not all of the hospitals support this, e.g (Charite in Berlin has this). We recommend to pick a hospital that has a children department as well, because not every hospital has one, even if it has a Clinic for Obstetrics. Why do you need one? Because if the baby suffered some issues during the delivery, then such a hospital can immediately ask for doctors to help your baby. Otherwise, they would need to transfer the baby to another hospital.

Step 2: Registering an Appointment For Giving Birth

Once you find a hospital, then you need to contact them to register an appointment for giving birth. Each hospital is different in how you register with them. For example, some require you to call, some require you visit and some has a website for this. For example, this is the online service to register for giving birth at Charite Berlin. Of course not all hospitals support English, so you might need some help for this.

Most important thing is to check the deadlines of each hospital to register for giving birth, because some only allows you to register if you are within a certain pregnancy week.

Also it’s important to know that although you will reserve an appointment to give birth at a specific hospital, you should expect that you may not be admitted on the day of your delivery in case the hospital is full and occupied. In this case they will transfer you to another one.

It’s good to know that you don’t really need an appointment for giving birth, because if your water broke unexpectedly on a date different than the date you specified or went to another hospital for emergency, then the hospital will admit you in case they are free, otherwise you will be transferred to another one.
