What should I do if I lose my job in Germany?

In case you lost your job in Germany and wondering what steps you should take, then hopefully this post should help you.

Here are two things you may wanna do (depending on your situation):

  • If you are a non-EU citizen, you should inform the foreigners office (Ausländerbehörde Berlin) immediately.
  • You should register as an unemployed person so you can start receiving unemployment benefits. If you were employed for at least 12 months, you will probably get (ALG1) 60% of your net income (but maxed at a certain amount). If you were employed for less than 12 months, then you will get something called ALG2, which is a fixed amount independent of your salary. Please be careful that you have to register as unemployed within 3 days from receiving your job termination notice, otherwise you might risk some penalties.

This is by far not a comprehensive list, nor an advise, so please make sure to do your own research.
